Initially, 11 November was remembered as the end of World War I — a horribly bloody war. We called it Armistice Day. In the United Kingdom, it’s also called Remembrance Day.
The last surviving combat veteran from the First World War was Chief Petty Officer Claude Choules, Royal Navy service from 1915 – 1926 and Royal Australian Navy service from 1926 – 1956. During his 41 years of naval service, Chief Choules served in command as Torpedo Officer and Chief Demolitions Officer.
Chief Petty Officer Choules, RN, passed away on 5 May 2011, aged 110 years and 63 days.
Today, there are no survivors of the First World War.
Today, we celebrate America’s Veterans
When their country needed them, these men and women stepped up.
Honor them.
